Dumbbell Nebula M27, Hubble image C017 / 3723

Dumbbell Nebula (M22, NGC 6853). Combined images from the Subaru Telescope and Hubble Space telescope of the Dumbbell Nebula M22. This object, 4.5 light years across, consists of glowing shells of gas and dust cast off by a dying star. It is 1360 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Vulpecula. At centre, gas atoms are being heated by ultraviolet light from the central white dwarf. Much of the cast off material will mix with nearby nebulae, helping to fuel the next generation of stars

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the Dumbbell Nebula M27, also known as M22 or NGC 6853. Combining images captured by both the Subaru Telescope and Hubble Space Telescope, this composite image provides a stunning view of this celestial wonder. Spanning an impressive distance of 4.5 light years across, the Dumbbell Nebula consists of luminous shells composed of gas and dust that were expelled by a dying star. Located approximately 1360 light years away from Earth in the constellation Vulpecula, it serves as a testament to the vastness and complexity of our universe. At its center, we witness gas atoms being heated by ultraviolet radiation emitted from a central white dwarf star. This process contributes to the creation and sustenance of nearby nebulae, fueling future generations of stars. The image reveals intricate details within this stellar nursery – swirling clouds illuminated by ionized gas create an ethereal ambiance reminiscent of an artist's brushstrokes on canvas. The interplay between darkness and vibrant hues evokes a sense of awe-inspiring grandeur. Through this photograph, we are reminded not only of our place in space but also our connection to these cosmic phenomena. It is a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit for knowledge about our origins and underscores the importance of scientific exploration in unraveling the mysteries that lie beyond our Milky Way galaxy.
