The HST was captured by the Space Shuttle Discovery during the mission STS-103 (19-27 December 1999). Once captured the HSTs computer, gyroscopes and tape recorders were replaced during a series of spacewalks or extravehicular activities (EVAs). The telescopes external insulation was also repaired. This mission was the third to service the HST since its launch in 1990
