Selection of 16th century artificial arms & hands

Engraving of a selection of artificial hands & arms devised & drawn by the French surgeon Ambroise Pare (1510-1590). Pare attached himself to the army as a barber-surgeon. He rose through the ranks until he was surgeon to a succession of four French kings, Henry 11 & his three sons. His greatest contribution to surgery was ending the practice of disinfecting gunshot wounds with boiling oil. Instead he practiced cleanliness & used ointments for the wounds. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable selection of 16th-century artificial arms and hands, meticulously devised and drawn by the renowned French surgeon Ambroise Paré. As an esteemed barber-surgeon, Paré dedicated his life to advancing medical practices during his time. Rising through the ranks, he became the trusted surgeon to four successive French kings, including Henry II and his three sons. Paré's most significant contribution to surgery was revolutionizing the treatment of gunshot wounds. Instead of using boiling oil for disinfection, which caused immense pain and often led to further complications, he advocated for cleanliness and employed ointments to heal these injuries effectively. His approach emphasized minimal interference with nature's healing processes—a principle that set him apart from many of his contemporaries. In addition to his groundbreaking techniques, Paré also played a crucial role in disseminating knowledge within the medical community. He summarized the works of Vesalius, another influential anatomist of that era, translating them into French for wider accessibility. This historical image not only provides us with a glimpse into medical history but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and resilience in overcoming physical limitations. These prosthetic limbs from the 16th century stand as tangible evidence of our relentless pursuit towards improving healthcare practices throughout time.
