SEM of a colony of Klebsiella pneumonia

False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a colony of Klebsiella pneumoniae, a species of Gram-negative, rod-like bacterium that causes pneumonia in humans. Species of Klebsiella possess polysaccharide capsules by means of which they may be divided into various types - types 1-3 contain the more pathogenic organisms and type 3 includes K. pneumoniae. Other species are widely distributed in nature, commonly exist in the human intestine, and are occasionally responsible for urinary tract, wound or other infections. Magnification: x8800 at 6x7 cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This false-color scanning electron micrograph (SEM) showcases a colony of Klebsiella pneumonia, an infamous Gram-negative bacterium that plagues humans with pneumonia. The rod-like structure of this bacterial species is clearly visible, emphasizing its microscopic nature and potential to cause harm. Klebsiella possesses polysaccharide capsules which classify them into different types; the more pathogenic organisms are found in types 1-3, with type 3 including K. pneumoniae itself. Although other species of Klebsiella can be found widely distributed in nature and commonly reside in the human intestine, they occasionally wreak havoc by causing urinary tract infections, wound infections, or other related ailments. The magnification level of x8800 at a size of 6x7 cm allows us to delve deep into the intricate world of these microorganisms. This SEM image not only serves as a visual testament to the complexity and diversity within bacteria but also highlights their role as disease-causing agents. Courtesy of Science Photo Library's extensive collection on microbes and bacteriology, this print offers a glimpse into the fascinating realm of microbiology. It reminds us how crucial it is for scientists and researchers to study these tiny organisms meticulously in order to combat infectious diseases effectively.
