SEM of kettle fur
False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of fur from a domestic kettle, showing the crystals that form in a hard water area. Kettle fur consists of needles of calcium sulphate which precipitates out of hard water into regular crystallographic shapes. The geologist knows calcium sulphate as anhydrite. Its monoclinic crystallographic lattice & flower-like clumps of needles are also the most common form in nature & it is from rocks bearing anhydrite that water derives its hardness. When water containing calcium sulphate is boiled or evaporates, the calcium sulphate precipitates out of solution. Magnification: x115 at 35mm. Gold tint. Original is BW A600/300. Reference: MICROCOSMOS, figure 7.17, page 135. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © DR JEREMY BURGESS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of kettle fur, captured through a false-color scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The image reveals the mesmerizing crystals that form in areas with hard water. Kettle fur, composed of calcium sulphate needles, precipitates out of hard water and takes on regular crystallographic shapes. Geologists refer to this compound as anhydrite due to its monoclinic crystallographic lattice structure. The delicate flower-like clumps of needles seen in this photograph are not only visually stunning but also represent the most common form found in nature. It is from rocks containing anhydrite that water acquires its hardness. When water containing calcium sulphate is boiled or evaporates, these crystals precipitate out of solution. Magnified at x115 using a 35mm lens, this gold-tinted SEM image offers a unique perspective into the microscopic world. The original black and white A600/300 photograph has been transformed into a vibrant display of colors that accentuate the complexity and elegance present within these tiny structures. This remarkable visual representation serves as a reminder of how even seemingly mundane objects like kettles can hold hidden wonders waiting to be discovered under closer inspection.
