Sergei Korolev in 1934
Sergei Korolev (1907-1966), pioneering Soviet rocket scientist. Korolev studied aviation in Moscow, and in his late teens designed and built gliders as a hobby. After developing an interest in rocketry, Korolev formed the Moscow Group for the Study of Reactive Motion who, in 1933, launched the USSRs first liquid-fuelled rocket. He was arrested during Stalins purges but, his importance being recognised, was allowed to continue his research. After the Second World War he was released and set to work developing rockets, both for space exploration and military use. His most famous projects were Sputnik 1 (1957), the first artificial satellite and Vostock 1 (1961), which carried the first man into space. Photographed in 1934

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white portrait captures the brilliant mind of Sergei Korolev, a pioneering Soviet rocket scientist. In 1934, at the young age of 27, Korolev's passion for aviation and rocketry led him to form the Moscow Group for the Study of Reactive Motion. It was this group that successfully launched the USSR's first liquid-fuelled rocket in 1933. However, his journey towards greatness was not without obstacles. During Stalin's purges, Korolev faced arrest but was fortunate enough to be recognized for his importance and allowed to continue his research. After World War II, he was released and dedicated himself to developing rockets for both space exploration and military purposes. Korolev's most iconic achievements include Sputnik 1 in 1957, which marked humanity's first artificial satellite launch into space, as well as Vostok 1 in 1961 that carried Yuri Gagarin - the first man ever - into space. His contributions played a pivotal role in shaping history during the intense Space Race between superpowers. This photograph provides a glimpse into an era where scientific breakthroughs were transforming our understanding of flight and pushing boundaries beyond imagination. Sergei Korolev stands tall as a symbol of determination and innovation amidst challenging circumstances; his legacy forever etched in the annals of engineering and physics.
