Shock absorber

Shock absorber on the Millennium bridge, London. This bridge became famous for its wobble. It measures 320m in length and is unusual as it uses lateral suspension to support the deck of the bridge. The wobble was caused by the natural frequency of the structure. Small movements in the deck caused large numbers of people to walk in step, which amplified the oscillation. The solution to this problem was to install shock absorbers to dampen out any oscillations before they were sufficiently large enough to influence people to walk in step. Photographed in London, UK

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Millennium Bridge in London, which gained fame for its unexpected wobble. Stretching an impressive 320 meters in length, this bridge stands out due to its unique use of lateral suspension to support the deck. The wobbling phenomenon was a result of the structure's natural frequency, where even slight movements on the deck caused a significant number of people to unintentionally synchronize their steps, amplifying the oscillation. To address this engineering challenge and ensure public safety, ingenious shock absorbers were installed along the bridge. These devices effectively dampen any oscillations before they reach a magnitude that could influence pedestrians' walking patterns. The installation of these shock absorbers proved instrumental in stabilizing the bridge and preventing further synchronization among walkers. Located over the majestic River Thames, this architectural marvel showcases both innovation and resilience. Its ability to sway gracefully with passing winds or river currents adds an element of dynamism to London's skyline while maintaining structural integrity. This stunning photograph serves as a testament to human ingenuity in overcoming challenges faced by large-scale infrastructure projects. It highlights how meticulous engineering solutions can transform what was once known as "the wobbly bridge" into an enduring symbol of technological achievement and artistic beauty.
