Shuttle photograph of Tropical Storm Sam
This oblique view of tropical storm Sam was photographed from the space shuttle. It was born in the eastern Indian Ocean near the islands of Timor and Sumba in Indonesia. The storm tracked southwestward attaining sustained winds in excess of 60 knots (110 km/hour). This shot shows the storm as it begins to dissipate over the south Indian Ocean. The eye of the storm is still visible near the centre, with the swirling bands of cloud propagating in a clockwise direction towards it. Winds aloft have begun to shear the tops of thunderclouds associated with the storm, forming a high cirrus cloud cover over the central area

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the majestic power of Tropical Storm Sam as seen from the space shuttle. Born in the eastern Indian Ocean near Timor and Sumba islands in Indonesia, this storm embarked on a southwestward journey, gathering strength with sustained winds exceeding 60 knots (110 km/hour). In this particular shot, we witness the storm's gradual dissipation over the vast expanse of the south Indian Ocean. The center of attention lies within the eye of the storm, still visible amidst swirling bands of clouds that propagate in a clockwise direction towards it. However, signs of its weakening become evident as winds aloft shear through thunderclouds associated with Sam. This shearing action creates a mesmerizing display of high cirrus cloud cover enveloping the central area. This photograph not only showcases nature's raw beauty but also serves as an invaluable tool for meteorologists studying tropical storms and their behavior. It provides valuable insights into how these powerful weather systems evolve and dissipate over time. Captured by Science Photo Library's shuttle imagery, this print offers a captivating glimpse into our planet's ever-changing climate and weather patterns. Whether you're fascinated by meteorology or simply appreciate awe-inspiring visuals, this image is sure to leave you captivated by Mother Nature's might.
