Silver hallmarks, 1831

Silver hallmarks from 1831 on the handle of a piece of silver cutlery. A hallmark is an official mark made on an item of precious metal to guarantee the quality of the metal. In the past this was done by guilds, and later by assay offices. Hallmarks usually indicate the quality, who made the item, and the year of marking. The five marks here (from bottom) are: the duty mark for King George IV (who died in 1830); the date letter (q) for the year 1831; the lion passant (walking lion) mark for sterling silver (.925 quality); the town of origin mark (a leopards head) for London; and the makers mark (FH) for Francis Higgins. Duty marks were sometimes still used for several years after a monarch had died

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate silver hallmarks from 1831, adorning the handle of a piece of exquisite silver cutlery. Hallmarks serve as official marks on precious metal items, guaranteeing their quality and authenticity. In earlier times, guilds were responsible for these marks, while assay offices took over later on. Each hallmark conveys vital information about the item: starting from the bottom, we see King George IV's duty mark (used even after his passing in 1830), followed by the date letter "q" denoting its creation year - 1831. The majestic lion passant symbolizes sterling silver with a remarkable . 925 quality standard. The town of origin mark proudly displays London's leopards head emblem, while Francis Higgins' maker's mark (FH) adds a personal touch to this remarkable piece. This photograph not only captures historical significance but also represents an era when craftsmanship and attention to detail were highly valued. It serves as a reminder of Britain's industrial prowess during the 19th century and highlights how common objects like cutlery can become symbols of artistry and excellence. As we gaze upon these familiar yet extraordinary hallmarks, we are transported back in time to appreciate both the beauty and functionality that such pieces brought into people's lives centuries ago.
