Sir Henry Stanley

Sir Henry Morton Stanley, (1841-1904), Anglo- American journalist and explorer. Stanley was sent to find the Scottish missionary and explorer Dr David Livingstone (1813-1873) by the New York Herald in 1869, as he had not been heard from for several years. Stanley found the ill Livingstone in Ujiji, Tanzania, in 1871, and nursed him back to health. The two men then explored the north end of Lake Tanganyika. Stanley returned to Europe in 1872, but Livingstone stayed on and died on an expedition the next year. In later trips, Stanley followed the River Congo to the sea and helped to found the Congo Free State (now the Republic of Zaire). Illustration taken from The Pictorial Treasury of Famous Men and Famous Deeds (1894)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the renowned Sir Henry Stanley, an Anglo-American journalist and explorer whose name is etched in history. In 1869, Stanley embarked on a daring mission assigned by the New York Herald to locate Dr David Livingstone, a Scottish missionary and explorer who had vanished for several years. Against all odds, he discovered the ailing Livingstone in Ujiji, Tanzania in 1871 and selflessly nursed him back to health. The bond between these two extraordinary men grew stronger as they ventured into uncharted territories at the northern end of Lake Tanganyika. While Stanley returned to Europe in 1872, Livingstone remained behind but tragically lost his life during another expedition the following year. Stanley's expeditions did not cease there; he continued his exploration along the River Congo until it reached its majestic destination - the sea. His remarkable efforts also played a pivotal role in establishing what is now known as the Republic of Zaire or Congo Free State. This vivid illustration from The Pictorial Treasury of Famous Men and Famous Deeds (1894) beautifully portrays Sir Henry Morton Stanley amidst his historical achievements. A man driven by curiosity and courage, he left an indelible mark on both African exploration and journalism.
