Skates collected for research

Skate specimens. Fishing net holding skates (Raja erinacea, with long tails) caught for biological research at the Woods Hole Marine Biology Labora- tory (MBL) in Massachusetts, USA. The skate has eyes unlike those of any other vertebrate, in that its retinas (the light sensitive membrane at the back of the eyeball) contain only rod cells. These are the light-sensitive cells that detect low light levels. All other vertebrates have both rods and colour-detecting cone cells in their retinas. Studying rods in isolation provides information on light/dark adaptation, and could lead to new ways of treating adaptation disorders such as night blindness and retinitis pigmentosa

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a collection of skates, specifically Raja erinacea, caught for the purpose of biological research at the renowned Woods Hole Marine Biology Laboratory (MBL) in Massachusetts, USA. The skates are held within a fishing net, their long tails elegantly displayed. What sets these fascinating creatures apart is their unique visual system - unlike any other vertebrate species. Skates possess retinas that solely consist of rod cells, which are responsible for detecting low light levels. This distinctive characteristic makes them ideal subjects for studying light/dark adaptation and offers potential insights into treating various eye disorders such as night blindness and retinitis pigmentosa. The image captures not only the scientific significance but also the beauty found in this field research endeavor. It highlights the delicate balance between human exploration and our quest to understand nature's wonders more deeply. As we gaze upon this snapshot from Science Photo Library, we can't help but marvel at the intricate details of each skate specimen and appreciate the dedication behind their collection. With its rich scientific context and aesthetic appeal, this photograph serves as a reminder of how interdisciplinary efforts like those conducted at MBL continue to push boundaries in advancing our knowledge about marine biology and potentially revolutionizing treatments for vision-related conditions.
