EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of sleeping sickness parasites. In this coloured scanning electron micrograph, we witness a mesmerizing scene within a mouse liver. The vibrant blue Trypanosoma brucei parasites contrast beautifully against the pink hue of white blood cells. T. brucei, a protozoan and the causative agent of African sleeping sickness, is transmitted to humans through the bite of tsetse flies. Upon infection, individuals may experience fever, joint pain, and itching. However, as these cunning parasites infiltrate the central nervous system, they bring about confusion, disruption in sleep patterns, and impaired coordination. The consequences are dire if left untreated; African sleeping sickness proves fatal without intervention. With its magnification at x3500 when printed at 10 centimetres wide, this image allows us to appreciate the microscopic intricacies that underlie such a devastating disease. As we delve into this visual masterpiece from Science Photo Library's collection on parasitology and pathogenic organisms like T. brucei, it serves as an important reminder of nature's delicate balance between host and parasite. This photograph not only highlights the scientific significance but also captivates our imagination with its stunning portrayal of wildlife intertwined with medical research.
