Snake venom crystals

Venom research. Hand places snake venom crystals in a desiccator. This venom is from the Malaysian pit viper (Calloselasma rhodostoma), and contains an anticoagulant drug, Ancrod, which is being studied for use in treating stroke patients. It improves blood flow by reducing the amount of fibrinogen (a clotting protein) in blood plasma. Strokes occur when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off by a blockage or bleeding in the brain. They can lead to brain damage and are a leading cause of death. Ancrod may reduce the extent of brain damage and lower the mortality rate. This work is being done by Knoll AG, a division of BASF Pharma, in Ludwigshafen, Germany

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of venom research. In this image, a hand delicately places snake venom crystals into a desiccator, revealing the mesmerizing beauty hidden within nature's most potent substances. The venom being studied here is extracted from the Malaysian pit viper, known as Calloselasma rhodostoma. What makes this particular venom so intriguing is its potential use in treating stroke patients. Within its composition lies an anticoagulant drug called Ancrod, which has shown promise in improving blood flow by reducing fibrinogen levels in blood plasma. Strokes occur when a blockage or bleeding disrupts the brain's blood supply, often leading to severe brain damage and even death. The researchers at Knoll AG, a division of BASF Pharma located in Ludwigshafen, Germany are diligently studying Ancrod to determine its effectiveness in reducing brain damage and lowering mortality rates associated with strokes. By harnessing the power of these snake venom crystals and their unique properties, they hope to unlock new possibilities for stroke treatment. This photograph not only captures the scientific significance behind snake venom research but also highlights the delicate balance between nature and medicine. It serves as a reminder that even within seemingly dangerous creatures like snakes lie potential solutions to some of humanity's greatest challenges.
