Snakes mating

Red-sided garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis) mating. The snakes mate in the spring, after emerging from hibernation. Later that year, each female produces about 16 young. The red-sided garter snake inhabits moist woods and grasslands in northern North America. It feeds on tadpoles, frogs, leeches, earthworms and rodents, and it can reach a length of over one metre. The bite is not venomous, but can be painful. These snakes are in Manitoba, Canada, famous for the worlds largest congregations of snakes. The snakes survive the Canadian winter by hibernating in underground dens. Photographed in May 2003

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing moment in the wild, showcasing the intricate mating ritual of Red-sided garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis). Emerging from their winter hibernation, these snakes engage in this fascinating behavior during the spring season. The image was taken in Manitoba, Canada, renowned for hosting the world's largest congregations of these slithering creatures. The red-sided garter snake is native to northern North America and thrives in moist woods and grasslands. Growing over one meter long, it sustains itself by devouring tadpoles, frogs, leeches, earthworms, and rodents. While its bite may not be venomous, it can certainly inflict pain upon unsuspecting prey or curious onlookers. In terms of reproduction, each female snake produces approximately 16 offspring later that year. This remarkable feat showcases their ability to ensure future generations thrive amidst their natural habitat. With a focus on zoology and reptilian behavior studies, this photograph offers valuable insights into the reproductive patterns of these magnificent creatures. Science Photo Library has expertly captured this snapshot of nature's wonders back in May 2003. It serves as a testament to both the beauty and complexity found within our planet's diverse ecosystems while shedding light on an often misunderstood species—the red-sided garter snake.
