SOFIA airborne observatory

SOFIA airborne observatory installed in its 747SP aircraft. The mounting structure (blue) is at upper left. SOFIA is the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy. It is a 2.5-metre infrared telescope that is flown in an aircraft to the stratosphere, some 10-50 kilometres above sea level. This allows the detection of infrared light that is normally blocked by water vapour lower in the atmosphere. SOFIA was jointly developed from 1996 by NASA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The first observations took place in May 2010. Photographed during SOFIAs Trans-Atlantic flight of September 2011. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © Detlev van Ravenswaay

EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the remarkable SOFIA airborne observatory, nestled within its 747SP aircraft. The mounting structure, depicted in a striking blue hue at the upper left corner of the image, highlights the intricate engineering behind this technological marvel. SOFIA, short for Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, houses a powerful 2.5-meter infrared telescope that ascends to the stratosphere between 10 and 50 kilometers above sea level. This unique positioning allows it to overcome one of nature's barriers - water vapor - which typically obstructs infrared light detection closer to Earth's surface. A joint effort between NASA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR), SOFIA represents an extraordinary collaboration in astrophysics and astronomical research. After years of development, this cutting-edge observatory embarked on its inaugural observations in May 2010. The photograph captures a moment during SOFIA's Trans-Atlantic flight in September 2011 when it soared through European skies aboard its Boeing 747SP carrier. Inside the aircraft's interior lies an array of advanced equipment and computer screens that facilitate precise orientation and focusing capabilities. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring image captured by Detlev van Ravenswaay from Science Photo Library, we are reminded of humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge beyond our planet. With each wavelength detected by SOFIA's sophisticated instruments high above Earth’s surface at an astounding altitude of approximately 41,000 feet (12,500 meters), new insights into stars and other celestial phenomena come into focus – propelling us further into the depths of space exploration in the twenty-first century.
