SOFIA airborne observatory aircraft

SOFIA airborne observatory aircraft. SOFIA is the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy. It is a 2.5-metre infrared telescope that is flown in its 747SP aircraft to the stratosphere, some 10-50 kilometres above sea level. This allows the detection of infrared light that is normally blocked by water vapour lower in the atmosphere. SOFIA was jointly developed from 1996 by NASA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The first observations took place in May 2010. Photographed on 17 September 2011, at Cologne Bonn Airport, following SOFIAs first Trans-Atlantic flight. Cologne is the location of the DLR headquarters. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © Detlev van Ravenswaay

EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures the impressive SOFIA airborne observatory aircraft, a remarkable feat of engineering and technology. Developed jointly by NASA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR), this 2.5-meter infrared telescope is housed within a modified Boeing 747SP aircraft, allowing it to reach the stratosphere at altitudes between 10-50 kilometers above sea level. By ascending to these heights, SOFIA overcomes the hindrance of water vapor in Earth's lower atmosphere, enabling it to detect elusive infrared light. Taken on September 17th, 2011, at Cologne Bonn Airport in Germany - where DLR has its headquarters - this image showcases SOFIA following its first Trans-Atlantic flight. The photograph highlights both the mirror-like exterior of the European-based airport and the American-built airplane that houses this cutting-edge astronomical observation equipment. In preparation for another scientific mission, scientists and engineers can be seen focusing their expertise on ensuring everything is stable before takeoff. This high-tech marvel represents a significant milestone in astrophysics as it expands our understanding of celestial bodies through observations made at specific wavelengths associated with infrared astronomy. As we delve further into the 21st century, advancements like SOFIA push boundaries and open new frontiers in our exploration of space. This resupplying moment captured by Detlev van Ravenswaay serves as a testament to international collaboration and technological prowess as we continue unraveling the mysteries of our universe.
