Sojourner on the surface of Mars

Sojourner. Mars Pathfinder mosaic image of the robotic Sojourner vehicle on the surface of Mars near the rock known as " Barnacle Bill" (at centre left). " Barnacle Bill" was the first rock to be studied by Sojourner with its Alpha-Proton X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS). Sojourner also carries a high-resolution camera to study rocks. The rover weighs about 9 kilogrammes, is 63 centimetres (cm) long and 48cm wide. It is powered by a solar panel which will allow for a few hours movement per day, and is controlled by an operator on Earth. Image taken by the Imager for Mars Pathfinder (IMP) on the third Martian day (Sol 3) that it spent on Mars since it landed on 4 July 1997

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Sojourner rover on the surface of Mars, near a prominent rock named "Barnacle Bill". The image, captured by the Imager for Mars Pathfinder (IMP) on Sol 3 since its landing on July 4,1997, offers an extraordinary glimpse into Martian exploration. Sojourner, a robotic vehicle weighing approximately 9 kilograms and measuring 63 centimetres in length and 48 centimetres in width, stands as a testament to human ingenuity and scientific curiosity. Equipped with advanced instruments such as the Alpha-Proton X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS) and a high-resolution camera, this pioneering rover embarked on an awe-inspiring mission to study rocks. Powered by solar panels that enable several hours of movement per day, Sojourner is remotely controlled by skilled operators back on Earth. Its presence signifies humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge beyond our home planet. The significance of "Barnacle Bill" cannot be overstated; it was the first rock meticulously examined by Sojourner using its state-of-the-art APXS instrument. This groundbreaking analysis aimed to unravel the mysteries hidden within Martian geology. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing photograph from Science Photo Library's collection of planetary imagery, we are reminded of humanity's unwavering determination to explore uncharted territories and expand our understanding of the universe. It serves as a testament to both scientific achievement and mankind's insatiable thirst for discovery.
