Solar eclipse sequence

Total solar eclipse. Sequence of images of the Sun during a total solar eclipse. Running from centre left to upper right, the sequence shows the disc of the Moon gradually moving over the disc of the Sun, and then moving away again. At totality, the Moon fits perfectly over the Sun and the corona (halo, white), the Suns atmosphere, becomes visible. It is not visible at other times because of the overwhelming brightness of the rest of the Sun. The moment of totality lasts for only a few minutes. Total solar eclipses usually occur less than once a year, and can only be seen from a small area of the Earths surface

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing sequence of a total solar eclipse, showcasing the celestial dance between the Sun and the Moon. The series of images starts from the center left and runs diagonally towards the upper right, revealing an awe-inspiring phenomenon in all its glory. As we observe this breathtaking spectacle, we witness the gradual movement of the Moon's disc over that of our radiant Sun. With each frame, anticipation builds as darkness encroaches upon daylight. At totality, a momentary alignment occurs where the Moon perfectly fits over our star, allowing us to glimpse its ethereal corona – a luminous halo surrounding it. The corona's delicate white glow is normally concealed by the overwhelming brightness emitted by our mighty Sun. However, during these rare few minutes of totality, nature unveils this stunning atmospheric phenomenon for lucky viewers within a small area on Earth's surface. Total solar eclipses are extraordinary events that occur less than once a year and offer an exclusive experience to those fortunate enough to witness them firsthand. This composite image beautifully combines multiple exposures to create a seamless montage against a tropical sky backdrop featuring palm trees. Immerse yourself in this visual journey through time as you explore this remarkable solar eclipse progression captured by Science Photo Library – an exquisite testament to both astronomical wonders and artistic composition.
