Solar eruption, SOHO image

Solar eruption. SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) image of a huge coronal mass ejection (CME) from the Sun. The solar disc is obscured to prevent the image being over-exposed. The white circle at centre represents the Sun. A CME is an energetic eruption from the corona, the hot outer layer of the Sun. A common event during periods of high solar activity, it consists of charged gas (plasma) travelling at up to 400 kilometres per second. If directed towards Earth, it may cause magnetic storms and aurorae. This one occurred on 23 January 2012. SOHO, orbiting at the Suns L1 point, was launched in 1995

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing solar eruption captured by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). The image, taken on 23 January 2012, reveals a massive coronal mass ejection (CME) emanating from the Sun. To prevent over-exposure, the solar disc is obscured, allowing us to focus solely on this breathtaking phenomenon. The white circle at the center represents our mighty Sun, while the CME itself is an energetic outburst originating from its scorching outer layer called the corona. These eruptions are common during periods of heightened solar activity and involve charged gas or plasma hurtling through space at incredible speeds of up to 400 kilometers per second. If directed towards Earth, such CMEs can trigger magnetic storms and awe-inspiring aurorae in our planet's skies. This particular event holds immense significance for astrophysics research as it was observed by SOHO, which has been orbiting at the Sun's L1 point since its launch in 1995. With its advanced instruments like LASCO (Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph), SOHO provides invaluable insights into solar physics and helps unravel mysteries surrounding space weather phenomena. This stunning photograph serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge about our stellar neighborhood. Courtesy of Science Photo Library, this remarkable print transports us beyond our terrestrial boundaries into the vastness of space where high-energy events like this remind us of both the beauty and power that reside within our celestial surroundings.
