Sori on a fern leaf, Polystichum

Fern sori. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of two sectioned sori" (spore containing structures) on a leaf of the male fern Polystichum filix-mas. Sori consist of clusters of sporangia (brown, stalked). Each sporangium contains many spores (tiny spheres). When the spores are ready for release, the indusium (pale green) covering each cluster of sporangia uncurls in dry conditions. This drying also occurs in the wall of the sporangium which eventually, due to tension, splits and catapults spores away from the plant. Spores germinate on the ground to form the prothallus of a new fern plant. Magnification: x2 at 5x7cm size. Magnification: x5 at 3x7 inch print size.". EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the intricate beauty of a fern leaf, specifically the male fern Polystichum filix-mas. The image focuses on two sectioned sori, which are spore-containing structures found on the leaf. Each sorus consists of clusters of brown, stalked sporangia that hold numerous tiny spores. As the spores mature and become ready for release, dry conditions cause a remarkable transformation. The indusium, depicted in pale green hues, covering each cluster of sporangia unfurls to expose them. Simultaneously, tension builds within the wall of each sporangium until it eventually splits open with force, catapulting the spores away from their parent plant. The magnified view at 5x7cm size reveals astonishing details while offering a glimpse into this fascinating reproductive process. At x2 magnification, viewers can appreciate the delicate structure and arrangement of these sori. Ferns play an essential role in nature's cycle as their dispersed spores germinate on the ground to form prothalli - early stages in fern plant development. This mesmerizing photograph serves as a testament to both nature's ingenuity and our ability to capture its wonders through scientific exploration.
