Soviet Sputnik 4 stamp, 1960

Soviet Sputnik 4 stamp commemorating the launch of the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 4 on 15 May 1960. Sputnik 4 was a test-flight of the Vostok spacecraft, which launched the following year, taking Yuri Gagarin into orbit. Sputnik 4 contained a dummy to simulate the presence of a person. The spacecraft remained in orbit until 5 September 1962, when it re-entered the Earths atmosphere where most of it burnt up. The letters CCCP at the bottom, and the country shown in red on the globe, both refer to the USSR

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Soviet Sputnik 4 stamp, dating back to the monumental year of 1960. The stamp was designed to commemorate the launch of the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 4 on May 15th, an event that marked a significant milestone in space exploration. Sputnik 4 served as a crucial test-flight for the Vostok spacecraft, which would later carry Yuri Gagarin into orbit and make history. This particular mission aimed to simulate human presence by including a dummy on board. Remarkably, this spacecraft remained in orbit until September 5th, 1962, when it bravely re-entered Earth's atmosphere and most of it burnt up upon re-entry. The stamp itself is adorned with various symbols representing its origin - the USSR. At the bottom lies the acronym CCCP (the Cyrillic abbreviation for USSR), while the country is highlighted in red on a globe illustration. This artistic representation beautifully captures both technological prowess and national pride. As we delve into this historical artifact through philately, we are reminded of humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and exploration beyond our planet's boundaries. It serves as a testament to an era defined by intense competition between superpowers during what became known as the Space Race. This stunning piece offers us not only insight into scientific achievements but also acts as a symbol of cultural heritage from one of history's most transformative periods – all encapsulated within this small yet powerful postal stamp from Science Photo Library's collection.
