Space shuttle landing

Space shuttle landing. Space Shuttle Endeavour landing at the end of mission STS-111. The parachute deployed behind the shuttle is used to reduce the landing run, reduce the wear on the brakes and provide increased directional stability in cross-wind landings. Mission STS-111 flew from June 5th to June 19th 2002. During the mission, the shuttle delivered equipment to the International Space Station, including parts of the stations mechanical arm. Photographed at Edwards Air Force Base, California, USA. The shuttle was diverted here because of bad weather at the primary landing site, Kennedy Space Centre, Florida, USA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring moment of the Space Shuttle Endeavour gracefully touching down at Edwards Air Force Base, California. The shuttle's safe return marked the end of its successful mission, STS-111, which took place from June 5th to June 19th in 2002. As it descended towards Earth, a parachute deployed behind the shuttle, serving multiple purposes. Firstly, it reduced the landing run required by the spacecraft, ensuring a smooth touchdown on the runway. Secondly, it helped minimize wear on the brakes and provided increased directional stability during cross-wind landings. Mission STS-111 played a vital role in supporting ongoing operations at the International Space Station (ISS). Onboard this flight were crucial equipment and components for enhancing ISS capabilities - including parts of its mechanical arm. Due to unfavorable weather conditions at Kennedy Space Centre in Florida - where landings typically occurred - Edwards Air Force Base became an alternative landing site for this particular mission. The photograph serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit of exploration beyond Earth's boundaries. It encapsulates both NASA's remarkable engineering achievements and America's commitment to manned spaceflight endeavors. This stunning image is brought to you by Science Photo Library and showcases humanity's triumphs in conquering new frontiers while inspiring future generations with wonderment about what lies beyond our planet’s atmosphere.
