Spectral classes of star

Spectral classes of star, computer artwork. There are seven main classes of star, categorised according to their temperature and spectrum. These are, from left to right, called O, B, A, F, G, K and M. The surface temperature determines their colour, and decreases from left to right. O stars are extremely hot and emit much of their radiation in the ultraviolet. B stars are slightly cooler but still extremely powerful, and A stars are cooler still but still appear white. F stars appear slightly yellow, while G stars, of which the Sun is one, appear yellower still. K stars appear orange, while M stars, the most common type in the galaxy, appear red

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning panoramic print showcases the fascinating world of stellar classification. The computer artwork beautifully illustrates the seven main classes of stars, each categorized based on their temperature and spectrum. From left to right, we witness the captivating journey through O, B, A, F, G, K, and M classes. The colors depicted in this artwork are not mere artistic choices but a direct representation of surface temperatures. As we move from left to right across the image, we observe a gradual decrease in temperature. O stars dominate the ultraviolet spectrum with their scorching heat while B stars follow closely behind with their slightly cooler yet immensely powerful radiance. A stars appear white as they continue to cool down compared to their predecessors. F stars exhibit a gentle yellow hue that adds an enchanting touch to our celestial tapestry. Our very own Sun belongs to the G class and shines with its characteristic yellowish glow. K-class stars take on an orange appearance before leading us into the realm of M-class stars which paint our galaxy red – these being the most abundant type among all others. Through this awe-inspiring illustration capturing various properties of these celestial bodies, Science Photo Library invites us into a world where astrophysics meets artistry; where astronomical wonders unfold before our eyes.
