Spinal cord. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a cross section through a spinal cord. It has a central region of grey matter (red) that contains nerve cell bodies and their associated fibres. The outer zone of white matter (yellow- brown) consists solely of tracts of nerve fibres. There is an outer covering of meninges (white), specialized connective tissue layers. The spinal cord is enclosed in the vertebral column (backbone, not seen).
