Spiral galaxy NGC 253

Spiral galaxy NGC 253. Infrared composite image of the spiral galaxy NGC 253, also known as the Silver Coin, or Sculptor, galaxy. It lies around 8 million light years from Earth in a group of galaxies called the South Polar, or Sculptor, group. It is a starburst galaxy, one experiencing intense recent star formation. Infrared can peer through the dense dust that obscures millions of stars from sight at visible wavelengths. In particular, the spiral arms are better distinguished and the core is brighter in infrared than in optical images. This image was made as part of the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) project, which started in 1997

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of Spiral galaxy NGC 253, also known as the Silver Coin or Sculptor galaxy. Located approximately 8 million light years away from Earth within the South Polar group of galaxies, this celestial wonder never fails to astound astronomers and stargazers alike. What makes this image truly remarkable is its composition in infrared. By utilizing this wavelength, scientists can penetrate through the dense dust that obscures countless stars when observed in visible light. As a result, intricate details such as the spiral arms become more distinct while the core appears brighter compared to optical images. The significance of this photograph extends beyond its aesthetic appeal; it sheds light on an extraordinary phenomenon occurring within NGC 253 – intense star formation known as a starburst. This galactic birth process fuels an abundance of new stars and contributes to its radiant allure. Captured as part of the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) project initiated in 1997, this image represents a monumental achievement in astronomical imaging. It serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of understanding our vast universe and unraveling its cosmic mysteries. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring snapshot from Science Photo Library, let us marvel at the grandeur and complexity inherent in Spiral galaxy NGC 253 - a breathtaking reminder of our place amidst the infinite expanse of space.
