Spiral galaxy NGC 6949, optical image C017 / 3750

Spiral galaxy NGC 6949, optical image. This galaxy is located between 10 and 20 million light years away from Earth on the border between the constellations Cepheus and Cygnus. It is sometimes known as the Fireworks galaxy because of its phenomenal rate of star birth and death. There are red regions of emission nebulosity within the spiral arms, where hot young stars ionise hydrogen gas and cause it to glow. The blue regions are due to fine dust particles reflecting starlight. The core of the galaxy appears yellow as it is dominated by older stars. Imaged by combining data from the Subaru Telescope with RGB data

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring Spiral galaxy NGC 6949, a celestial beauty located millions of light years away from our planet. Nestled between the constellations Cepheus and Cygnus, this mesmerizing galaxy has earned itself the nickname "Fireworks galaxy" due to its extraordinary rate of star birth and death. The image reveals vibrant red regions of emission nebulosity scattered within the spiral arms. These crimson pockets are formed when hot young stars ionize hydrogen gas, causing it to emit a stunning glow. In contrast, ethereal blue areas emerge as fine dust particles reflect the luminous starlight. At the core of NGC 6949 lies a yellow hue dominated by older stars, adding depth and character to this cosmic masterpiece. Imaged through a combination of data captured by the Subaru Telescope with RGB data processing techniques, every intricate detail is brought to life in vivid clarity. Photographer Robert Gendler skillfully captures this celestial wonderland where stellar nurseries flourish amidst vast clouds and nebulae. This breathtaking snapshot offers us an opportunity to marvel at the wonders that lie beyond our own world while reminding us of our place in an ever-expanding universe filled with infinite possibilities.
