Spirogyra algae

Spirogyra algal strand. Confocal light micrograph of a filament of Spirogyra sp. green algae. This alga forms slimy threads called " water-silk" or " mermaids tresses" in stagnant or slow moving water. The filament is made up of elongated cells (two whole ones seen) that secrete a mucilaginous substance which binds adjacent filaments. Each cell contains one or more chloroplasts, arranged in spiral bands (green). The chloroplasts contain green chlorophyll pigments and are the sites of photosynthesis in each cell. Magnification x170 when printed 10cm high

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate beauty of Spirogyra algae. The confocal light micrograph captures a filament of Spirogyra sp. , a type of green algae commonly found in stagnant or slow-moving water. These slimy threads, often referred to as "water-silk" or "mermaids tresses" create an ethereal and mesmerizing sight. The filament is composed of elongated cells, two of which are visible in the image. These cells secrete a mucilaginous substance that binds adjacent filaments together, forming delicate strands. Each cell contains one or more chloroplasts, which are arranged in spiral bands and appear vibrant green under fluorescence. Chloroplasts play a crucial role in photosynthesis within each cell, harnessing sunlight to produce energy for the organism. This process gives Spirogyra its characteristic green coloration due to the presence of chlorophyll pigments within these vital organelles. With a magnification factor of x170 when printed at 10cm high, this print allows us to appreciate the microscopic details and complexity present within nature's smallest organisms. It serves as a reminder of the incredible diversity and wonder that can be found even in seemingly insignificant corners of our world.
