Stable fly, SEM

Stable fly. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a stable fly (Stomoxys calcitrans). It has large compound eyes (blue). The stable fly uses its proboscis (green) to pierce the skin and suck the blood of domestic animals. Female flies require a blood meal to reproduce. S. calcitrans gathers in swarms that can stress cows so much that their milk yield is reduced. It is also a vector of diseases, for example swamp fever, anthrax and brucellosis. The best method of preventing this fly from troubling animals is to stop it breeding by removing its breeding grounds, which are hay, manure, spilled feed and wet vegetation

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a stable fly, captured through a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The head of this particular Stomoxys calcitrans species is highlighted, revealing its striking compound eyes in a mesmerizing shade of blue. The green proboscis stands out as it serves the purpose of piercing the skin to extract blood from domestic animals. Female stable flies require a blood meal to reproduce, making them both an annoyance and potential health hazard. These flies often gather in swarms that can cause significant stress to cows, leading to reduced milk yield. Additionally, they act as vectors for various diseases such as swamp fever, anthrax, and brucellosis. To prevent these troublesome insects from bothering animals, experts recommend eliminating their breeding grounds. This includes removing hay, manure, spilled feed, and wet vegetation where they typically lay eggs. The photograph not only captures the scientific essence but also highlights the importance of understanding these pests' behavior and implementing effective prevention methods. With its vibrant colors and detailed features on display against a horizontal backdrop, this image offers viewers an up-close encounter with one of nature's most fascinating yet problematic creatures - showcasing the wonders and challenges found within our animal kingdom.
