EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the grandeur of Ancient Olympia, where the magnificent Statue of Zeus once stood. A true masterpiece created by the renowned sculptor Phidias, this colossal statue measured an astounding 12 meters and resided within the Temple of Zeus itself. Adorned with exquisite details, it was a sight to behold, embellished with ivory, ebony, gold, and precious stones. The significance of this awe-inspiring monument extended beyond its artistic brilliance. Olympia was not only the birthplace of the Olympic Games but also held immense religious importance. The games were intertwined with sacred rituals and ceremonies dedicated to none other than Zeus himself – king of all gods. As we gaze upon this colored historical artwork published in The Picture Magazine back in 1894, we can almost feel the reverence that surrounded these ancient grounds. To honor their victories at these prestigious games, athletes were bestowed wreaths crafted from olive branches originating from a tree adjacent to the Temple of Zeus. This image transports us into a world steeped in classical antiquity and archaeology; it serves as a reminder that history is alive through art. Let us marvel at this remarkable illustration capturing both human achievement and divine worship - an ode to one of Greece's most celebrated deities amidst Europe's rich cultural heritage.
