Steinitzs shrimp-goby and shrimp
Steinitzs shrimp-goby (Amblyeleotris steinitzi) and an alpheid shrimp (Alpheus sp.) at the entrance to their burrow. Steinitzs shrimp-gobies are always found in a mutualistic association with an alpheid shrimp. The near-blind shrimp builds and maintains the burrow, while the goby guards it. When outside of the burrow the shrimp will rest one of its antennae on the fish, which will quiver if it detects danger. Steinitzs shrimp- goby grows up to 8 centimetres in length and is found in sandy areas near coral reefs in the Indo- Pacific region. Photographed off Indonesia

Burrow Guarding Indonesia Mutualism Partnership Prawn Shrimp
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the fascinating partnership between Steinitzs shrimp-goby and an alpheid shrimp at the entrance of their burrow. In this mutualistic association, the near-blind alpheid shrimp diligently constructs and maintains the burrow, while its vigilant goby counterpart stands guard. The symbiotic duo relies on each other for survival in the intricate underwater world. The remarkable bond between these two species is beautifully illustrated as the alpheid shrimp rests one of its antennae on the fish when outside of their shared sanctuary. This subtle touch serves as a communication signal, allowing the goby to quiver if it detects any potential danger lurking nearby. Steinitzs shrimp-gobies are known to grow up to 8 centimeters in length and can be found dwelling in sandy areas near coral reefs across the Indo-Pacific region. Their existence showcases nature's ingenuity, highlighting how different organisms can come together to form harmonious partnerships for their own benefit. Photographed off Indonesia by Science Photo Library, this image not only celebrates marine life but also offers a glimpse into a biological marvel that exemplifies mutualism in action. It reminds us of nature's incredible ability to foster cooperation among diverse species, creating a delicate balance essential for our planet's thriving ecosystems.
