Stomata on epidermis of Elder leaf
Stomata. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of the under surface of a leaf from an Elder tree, Sambucus nigra, showing an open stomata. Stomata (stoma) are breathing pores which regulate the exchange of gases between the leafs interior and the atmosphere. Stomatal closure is a natural response to darkness or drought. Each stomata is controlled by the water content within a pair of guard cells flanking its central pore. When these guard cells increase in water content and turgidity their inner walls bow away from each other and the stomata widens. Conversely when the guard cells lose water the stomata closes. Elder Open Plants Pores Sambucus Nigra Stoma Stomata
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of stomata on the epidermis of an Elder leaf. The coloured scanning electron micrograph provides a close-up view of the under surface, revealing open stomata that resemble tiny breathing pores. Stomata play a vital role in regulating gas exchange between the leaf's interior and the atmosphere. In response to darkness or drought, stomatal closure occurs naturally. Each individual stoma is controlled by a pair of guard cells flanking its central pore. When these guard cells absorb water and become turgid, their inner walls bow away from each other, causing the stomata to widen and facilitate gas exchange. Conversely, when water is lost by the guard cells, they shrink and cause the stomata to close. The magnified image at x715 reveals intricate details within this microscopic world. It measures 6x4.5cm in size, allowing us to appreciate nature's remarkable design on such a small scale. This photograph not only highlights botanical wonders but also emphasizes our interconnectedness with plants as we rely on them for oxygen production through these fascinating structures called stomata. Science Photo Library has once again captured nature's marvels with precision and artistry in this stunning print.
