Stoplight parrotfish supermale

Stoplight parrotfish (Sparisoma viride) on a coral reef. The colouration of this fish indicates that it is a supermale. Females and immature males are brown, white and red (see image Z605/1420). The supermale is the dominant male in a given area of the reef, and has his choice of breeding partners. The stoplight parrotfish is a protogynous hermaphrodite: all young fish are female. They change sex as they grow, but only one of the males will develop into a supermale. When the supermale dies another male develops supermale colouration. The stoplight parrotfish inhabits reefs in the tropical western Atlantic, from Florida, USA, to Brazil. It feeds on algae and corals and can reach 64 centimetres in length. Photographed off Bonaire Island in the Netherlands Antilles, in the Caribbean Sea

Bonaire Caribbean Sea Coral Reef Netherlands Antilles Sparisoma Viride Stoplight Parrotfish Super Male

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the vibrant and striking Stoplight parrotfish supermale, also known as Sparisoma viride, in its natural habitat on a coral reef. The brilliant coloration of this fish signifies its status as a supermale, granting it dominance over a specific area of the reef and the privilege to choose its breeding partners. The Stoplight parrotfish is an intriguing species that exhibits protogynous hermaphroditism. All young fish are born female and undergo a remarkable transformation as they mature. Only one male will develop into a supermale with such resplendent hues. Upon the demise of the current supermale, another male will assume this coveted role by acquiring similar coloration. Inhabiting reefs spanning from Florida, USA to Brazil in the tropical western Atlantic region, this fascinating creature feeds on algae and corals while growing up to an impressive length of 64 centimeters. The photograph was captured off Bonaire Island in the Netherlands Antilles within the Caribbean Sea's depths. This image not only highlights nature's awe-inspiring beauty but also serves as a testament to marine biology's wonders. It encapsulates elements of zoology and wildlife exploration while offering insight into biological processes like protogyny. With its vivid portrayal of underwater life against a backdrop of stunning coral formations, this photograph truly captures both scientific intrigue and aesthetic appeal.
