TEM of HIV (AIDS) viruses budding from a T-cell

AIDS virus. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a T-lymphocyte blood cell infected with Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the causative agent of AIDS. At lower frame is the T-cell surface, with spherical virus particles in close proximity. The dark core of each virus, containing RNA, is seen. HIV instructs the cell to reproduce more viruses which bud away, as here, from the cell membrane, to reinfect other T-cells. By this process of viral budding the T-cell is killed. Depletion of the number of T-cells in the blood is the main reason for the destruction of a persons immune system in the disease of AIDS. Magnification: x135, 000 at 8x10 inch size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures the intricate and devastating reality of HIV (AIDS) viruses in action. Taken using a Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM), it showcases a T-cell, infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), which is responsible for causing AIDS. In this image, we witness the process of viral budding, where spherical virus particles emerge from the surface of the T-cell. Each virus contains RNA within its dark core, instructing the cell to produce more viruses that will go on to infect other T-cells. Tragically, this continuous cycle ultimately leads to the destruction of a person's immune system. The depletion of T-cells in an individual's blood is one of the primary reasons behind AIDS' detrimental impact on their health. As these vital cells are killed off by HIV infection, their ability to defend against infections and diseases diminishes significantly. With a magnification level set at x135,000 for an 8x10 inch size print, this photograph offers us a glimpse into a microscopic world that holds immense consequences for those affected by HIV/AIDS. It serves as both a reminder of our ongoing battle against this global epidemic and an inspiration for continued research and efforts towards finding effective treatments or even eradication strategies.
