Thorny devil lizard

Thorny devil lizard (Moloch horridus) on sand. The brown colouration of this desert-dwelling lizard helps to camouflage it in scrub and red sand. It feeds exclusively on black ants, which it licks up with its tongue. It is well adapted to its desert habitat, having a system of grooves on its skin which lead to the corners of its mouth. It can therefore drink moisture that falls on its back. An agamid lizard, it may reach a length of over 20 centimetres. It inhabits the deserts of Australia. Photographed near Shark Bay, Western Australia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the incredible Thorny devil lizard, also known as Moloch horridus, in its natural habitat. The lizard's brown coloration perfectly blends with the scrub and red sand of the desert, providing it with exceptional camouflage. This remarkable creature has adapted to survive in harsh conditions by feeding exclusively on black ants, which it skillfully licks up with its long tongue. What makes this lizard truly unique is its ability to collect moisture from its surroundings. Its skin features a network of grooves that lead directly to the corners of its mouth, enabling it to drink any water droplets that fall onto its back. With a length exceeding 20 centimeters, this agamid lizard thrives in the deserts of Australia. The photograph was taken near Shark Bay in Western Australia, capturing not only the beauty of nature but also showcasing the sandy landscape where these thorny devils reside.
