This apparatus includes an azimuth circle (lower centre), a compass needle and magnifying glasses (centre), a screw to adjust the needle (centre right), and a vertical circle (behind needle). This device allows compass readings to be taken in an inclined plane, which can be helpful for some forms of navigation or in locations where the magnetic field itself is tilted. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of European history - the Tilt compass from the 19th century. The intricate apparatus, featured in this illustration from the renowned French popular science weekly La Science Illustree, is a testament to the technological advancements of its time. At first glance, one can observe various components that make up this ingenious device. Positioned at the lower center is an azimuth circle, providing accurate measurements for navigation purposes. In the center lies a compass needle accompanied by magnifying glasses, enabling precise readings even in challenging conditions. A screw on the right allows for adjustments to be made to ensure accuracy. What sets this particular compass apart is its ability to take readings in an inclined plane. This feature proves invaluable for navigating terrains where magnetic fields are tilted or when unconventional forms of navigation are required. The historical significance of this artwork cannot be overstated; it offers us a glimpse into how navigational tools were developed during the 1800s. Created by Louis Figuier and published as part of La Science Illustree's eighth volume in 1891, this image serves as both an educational resource and a tribute to human ingenuity. As we explore this monochrome depiction with awe and curiosity, we are reminded of our ancestors' relentless pursuit of knowledge and their determination to conquer new frontiers through technology and innovation.
