Time-lapse photograph of partial lunar eclipse

Time-lapse photograph of a partial lunar eclipse which is caused by the entry of the Moon into the cone of the shadow cast by the Earth. During a lunar eclipse the Moon does not generally disappear. It is still visible thanks to the sunlight refracted onto its surface by the Earths atmosphere. Since red light is refracted less than blue light the Moon has a red-coppery colour. The lunar disc appears to be darker and redder when eclipses occur after strong volcanic eruptions. This is caused by the large amount of ash thrown into the atmosphere which scatters blue light more strongly than red light

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing beauty of a partial lunar eclipse, showcasing the celestial dance between the Earth, Moon, and Sun. As the Moon gracefully enters the cone of Earth's shadow, it undergoes a stunning transformation that is beautifully depicted in this time-lapse photograph. During a lunar eclipse, our satellite does not vanish entirely but instead takes on an enchanting red-coppery hue. This phenomenon occurs due to sunlight being refracted by our planet's atmosphere onto the lunar surface. The refraction process favors red light over blue light since red light is refracted less than its counterpart. The result is a breathtaking sight where the lunar disc appears darker and redder during eclipses following powerful volcanic eruptions. These eruptions release copious amounts of ash into the atmosphere, causing blue light to scatter more intensely compared to red light. In this extraordinary image captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of both the scientific marvels and artistic wonders found within our universe. It serves as a testament to humanity's fascination with astronomy and cosmology while highlighting nature's ability to create awe-inspiring spectacles that transcend time itself.
