Tricolporate pollen of rose flower

Rose pollen. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of tricolporate pollen grains of a Garden Rose, Rosa sp. Pollen grains are the male sexual spores that are discharged from the male part of the flower. They contain the gamete that ferti- lizes the female ovule to form a seed. Pollen grains are classified according to a number of features: pores (porate), furrows (colpate), or both (colporate). Rose pollen has three furrows from each of which protrudes a bulge or pore (as seen here). They are thus tricolporate". Rose plants are insect pollinated, relying on insects to carry the pollen to the female flower structures. Magnification: x1, 035 at 5x7cm size. Magnification: x2, 550 at 12x16cm size."

Exine Plants Pollen Reproduction Reproductive Rose Type

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of tricolporate pollen from a rose flower. The colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM) reveals the delicate details of these male sexual spores, which are essential for fertilization and seed formation. Each pollen grain contains the gamete that will unite with the female ovule, kickstarting the reproductive process. Rose pollen is classified as tricolporate due to its three furrows, each adorned with a bulge or pore. This unique feature can be observed in this image, highlighting the complexity and diversity found within nature's creations. The reliance on insects for pollination is evident in rose plants. These tiny grains rely on insects to carry them from one flower to another, ensuring successful reproduction. It is through this symbiotic relationship that roses continue to thrive and enchant us with their vibrant colors and intoxicating scents. Magnified at x1,035 for a 5x7cm size print or x2,550 for a 12x16cm size print, this photograph allows us to appreciate the microscopic wonders hidden within our natural world. Science Photo Library has captured not only an artistic masterpiece but also provided valuable insights into botany and plant reproduction through this stunning image of tricolporate rose pollen.
