Tritons geysers

Tritons geysers. Artwork of erupting geysers (lower left & right) on Triton, with the planet Neptune seen at upper left. The geysers are composed of liquid nitrogen and methane. Prevailing winds carry the liquids (centre right) across the moons surface. This phenomenon was discovered following the Voyager 2 encounter with Neptune in August 1989. Triton is the coldest world in the solar system, with temperatures as low as -235 degrees Celsius. It is the only moon in the Solar System to orbit in an opposite direction to that of its parent planets rotation (retrograde). Neptunes faint rings are seen. The Plough in Ursa Major is at upper right. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © CHRIS BUTLER/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

EDITORS COMMENTS

This artwork showcases the mesmerizing geysers of Triton, one of Neptune's enigmatic moons. The lower left and right corners burst with erupting geysers composed of liquid nitrogen and methane, creating a stunning display against the backdrop of the colossal planet Neptune in the upper left corner. Prevailing winds gracefully carry these ethereal liquids across Triton's desolate surface, leaving behind a trail that adds to its otherworldly beauty. Discovered after Voyager 2 encountered Neptune in August 1989, this phenomenon reveals Triton as the coldest world within our solar system, where temperatures plummet to an astonishing -235 degrees Celsius. What makes this moon even more extraordinary is its retrograde orbit – it orbits in the opposite direction to that of its parent planet's rotation. Neptune's faint rings delicately grace the scene while Ursa Major's iconic Plough constellation shines brightly at upper right. This intricate illustration captures not only the vastness and complexity of our universe but also highlights Triton as a unique celestial body within it. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded of both our insignificance amidst such cosmic wonders and our insatiable curiosity for unraveling their mysteries. It serves as a reminder that there is still so much more to explore beyond what meets our eyes here on Earth.
