View of Barringer Crater, Arizona, USA

Barringer Crater. View of Barringer, or Meteor, Crater near Winslow in northeast Arizona, USA. Barringer Crater was named after the mining engineer who first suggested that it was formed by a meteorite impact. It is around 50, 000 years old and is about 170 metres deep and 1200 metres across. Several attempts to mine the iron-rich material of the meteor were made before a visitor centre (at upper left) was built in the 1960 s. Coesite and stishovite, two new silica minerals which are created at high temperatures and pressures, were first identified here. In recent years the crater has been used for astronaut training and studies in planet comparison

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the breathtaking view of Barringer Crater, located in northeast Arizona, USA. Also known as Meteor Crater, it was named after a brilliant mining engineer who proposed that this awe-inspiring formation was created by a meteorite impact. With an estimated age of around 50,000 years old, this crater stretches approximately 170 meters deep and spans an impressive 1200 meters across. The significance of Barringer Crater extends beyond its sheer size and beauty. Numerous attempts were made to mine the iron-rich material from the meteor before the construction of a visitor center in the 1960s. This visitor center can be seen in the upper left corner of the photograph. Moreover, this remarkable site has played a pivotal role in scientific discoveries. It is here that coesite and stishovite - two silica minerals formed under extreme temperatures and pressures - were first identified. In recent times, Barringer Crater has served as more than just a tourist attraction; it has become an invaluable training ground for astronauts and a hub for studies comparing different planets within our solar system. This extraordinary image captures not only the grandeur of nature's power but also highlights how exploration and research continue to unravel fascinating secrets hidden within our planet's geological wonders.
