Vought V-173 experimental aircraft C017 / 7570

Vought V-173 experimental aircraft. The Vought V-173 was built in 1942 for the US Navy. The semi-circular all-wing design earned it the nick-name of flying pancake. The low-aspect ratio wing design offered better drag resistance at the wing tips compared to conventional aircraft with propeller engines mounted mid-wing. The compact design made the V-172 structurally strong, offered high manoeuvrability and could fly at very slow speeds. Despite nearly 190 test flights, the V-173 project ended in 1947

1942 Aeroplane Aircraft Aviation Avionics Engineering Experimental Flying Saucer Machine New Technology Novel Technology Prototype Vehicle

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Vought V-173 experimental aircraft, also known as the "flying pancake". Built in 1942 for the US Navy, this unique machine boasted a semi-circular all-wing design that set it apart from conventional aircraft of its time. The low-aspect ratio wing configuration provided enhanced drag resistance at the wing tips, a feature absent in propeller-driven mid-wing planes. With its compact yet robust structure, the V-173 demonstrated exceptional strength and maneuverability while maintaining the ability to fly at incredibly slow speeds. This technological marvel underwent nearly 190 test flights before ultimately concluding in 1947. The image captures not only an engineering masterpiece but also represents a significant advancement in aviation during the early 20th century. Its unconventional appearance earned it comparisons to a flying saucer due to its novel technology and distinctive shape. Displayed by NASA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, this photograph immortalizes an era when innovation and experimentation pushed boundaries within American aerospace engineering. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit of progress in aviation technology.
