Two Voyager 2 images of the planet Uranus

Voyager 2 images of Uranus taken on 17 January 1986, when the spacecraft was 9.1 million kilomet- res (5.7 million miles) from the planet. The left true-colour image was composed from a series taken with blue, green & orange filters. The darker shading corresponds to the day-night boundary. The blue-green colour results from absorption of red light by methane gas in Uranuss atmosphere. The right image uses false colour & contrast enhancement to bring out details in the polar region. A dark polar hood is visible surrounded by progressively lighter concentric bands. This might be due to a brown smog being arranged into bands by zonal motions of the upper atmosphere. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases two Voyager 2 images of the enigmatic planet Uranus, captured on January 17,1986. Taken when the spacecraft was approximately 9.1 million kilometers (5.7 million miles) away from Uranus, these images provide a mesmerizing glimpse into its mysterious atmosphere. The left image reveals a true-color composition crafted from a series of snapshots taken with blue, green, and orange filters. The contrasting shades depict the boundary between day and night on Uranus. Interestingly, the distinctive blue-green hue is attributed to methane gas in the planet's atmosphere absorbing red light. In contrast, the right image employs false color and contrast enhancement techniques to unveil intricate details within Uranus' polar region. Here we witness a dark polar hood surrounded by concentric bands that gradually become lighter in shade. Scientists speculate that this peculiar pattern might be caused by zonal motions of the upper atmosphere arranging brown smog into distinct bands. This extraordinary photograph offers valuable insights into our understanding of planetary dynamics and serves as a testament to Voyager 2's remarkable journey through our solar system. With its scientific significance reaching far beyond commercial use, this image stands as an awe-inspiring testament to humanity's quest for knowledge about our celestial neighbors.
