Water bear, SEM C016 / 9082

Water bear (Echiniscus granulatus). Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a water bear, or tardigrade (phylum Tardigrada). Water bears are small, water-dwelling, segmented micro-animals with eight legs that live in damp habitats such as moss or lichen. They are classed as extremophiles as they can survive dry conditions by changing into a desiccated state, in which they can remain for many years. Whilst in this form (known as a tun) they can withstand the most extreme environments and can tolerate radiation levels as high as x1000 more than other animals, including humans. They have even been brought back alive after spending 10 days in the vacuum of space. Magnification: x100, when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the incredible world of micro-animals with a close-up view of a water bear, also known as a tardigrade. The image, captured using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), reveals the intricate details of the head of this fascinating creature from the phylum Tardigrada. Water bears are small segmented organisms that inhabit moist environments like moss or lichen. They possess eight legs and are renowned for their ability to survive in extreme conditions. When faced with dryness, they enter a desiccated state called a tun, which allows them to endure harsh environments for many years. In fact, they can withstand radiation levels up to 1000 times higher than other animals, including humans. The resilience of these creatures is truly remarkable; they have even been revived after spending ten days in the vacuum of space! This makes them extremophiles - organisms capable of surviving in extreme conditions that would be fatal to most other life forms. This stunning photograph magnified at x100 and printed on black background captures every minute detail: from its limbs and claws to its mouth and head. It serves as a reminder that there is an entire microscopic world teeming with diverse life forms waiting to be explored and appreciated. Featuring vibrant colors against a dark backdrop, this print beautifully highlights the unique beauty found within nature's smallest inhabitants – showcasing biology at its finest.
