William Camden, English antiquarian C017 / 7988

William Camden (1551-1623), English antiquarian, historian and pioneer of archaeology. Camdens surveys of Roman and prehistoric sites in England, including the first study of Stonehenge, were presented in Britannia, published in Latin in 1586 and in English in 1610. He also wrote Annals, a study of Elizabeth Is reign. Camden taught at Westminster school for 23 years and endowed the Camden professorship of history at Cambridge University. The inscription refers to his role as Clarenceux King of Arms at the College of Arms in London, and in the portrait he is wearing his tabard and chain of office.
