X-ray of the scorpion, Palamnaeus fulvipes

Palamnaeus scorpion. X-ray of the scorpion Palamnaeus fulvipes. A hard exoskeleton covers the whole body of the animal. Scorpions are carnivorous arachnids, their prey consisting of beetles, cockroaches and other arthropods. Prey is grasped with the pincers, then passed to the chelicerae (small, paired first appendages) which carry food to the mouth. The poison spine in the " tail" is used only when the prey is large or struggles violently. Four pairs of walking legs are seen. The flattened body of scorpions enable them to live in cracks in rocks and under stones. They are typically active at night

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an incredible X-ray image of the Palamnaeus fulvipes scorpion, revealing its intricate anatomy. The scorpion's entire body is encased in a robust exoskeleton, providing it with exceptional protection and strength. As carnivorous arachnids, these fascinating creatures primarily feed on beetles, cockroaches, and other arthropods. Their hunting technique involves seizing their prey with their formidable pincers before transferring it to their chelicerae – small appendages that transport food to the mouth. The photograph also highlights the venomous spine located at the tip of the scorpion's "tail" which is reserved for larger or more resistant prey. Additionally, we can observe four pairs of walking legs that enable these agile predators to navigate various terrains effortlessly. With their flattened bodies, scorpions possess a remarkable ability to inhabit narrow crevices within rocks and hide beneath stones. These nocturnal creatures are most active during nighttime hours when they embark on their quests for sustenance.
