View of the starboard side of the three-masted French steel ship Socoa in Falmouth Harbour with tugs alongside. Note the remains of a wooden warship being broken up in the right foreground. The Socoa was built in 1901 by Chantier and Atelier de St Nazaire at St Nazaire and registered in Bayonne. At 2613 tons gross, she was 282 feet 9 inches x 44 feet x 22 feet 7 inches. She was on passage from Stettin to San Francisco carrying cement to rebuild the city after earthquake damage when she was stranded on Craggan Rock, Cadgwith, on 31st July 1906. She was successfully floated off after jettisoning 50, 000 barrels of cement. She was later renamed Thiers. Photographer: Unknown

This print captures the majestic presence of the three-masted French ship Socoa in Falmouth Harbour, Cornwall in 1906. The starboard side of this magnificent steel vessel is showcased, with tugs gracefully maneuvering alongside her. In the foreground, remnants of a wooden warship being dismantled can be seen, adding an intriguing historical element to the scene. The Socoa was constructed in 1901 by Chantier and Atelier de St Nazaire at St Nazaire and registered in Bayonne. With a weight of 2613 tons gross, she measured an impressive 282 feet 9 inches long by 44 feet wide and stood at a height of 22 feet 7 inches. This particular voyage saw her transporting cement from Stettin to San Francisco for post-earthquake reconstruction efforts. However, fate had other plans for the Socoa when she ran aground on Craggan Rock in Cadgwith on July 31st, causing great concern among those onboard. Fortunately, after jettisoning an astonishing amount of cargo - around 50,000 barrels of cement - she was successfully refloated. Later renamed Thiers, this resilient vessel continued its maritime journey beyond this incident. The photographer responsible for capturing this remarkable moment remains unknown but has left us with a timeless image that showcases both the beauty and challenges faced by seafaring vessels like the Socoa during their voyages across treacherous waters.
