Sofia Vasilyevna Kovalevskaya (1850-1891), Russian mathematician. Kovalevskaya was the first female member of the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences. Despite the attitudes of the time towards academic work by women, she gained respect for her work on differential equations and Abelian integrals. She was appointed to the University of Stockholm, and in 1888 she won the prestigious Prix Bordin prize (awarded by the French Academy of Science) for her groundbreaking paper On the Rotation of a Solid Body about a Fixed Point. This artwork, with a Cyrillic caption, depicts Kovalevskaya as she appeared in 1871

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Sofia Kovalevskaya, a remarkable Russian mathematician who defied societal norms and made groundbreaking contributions to her field. Born in 1850, Kovalevskaya became the first female member of the prestigious St Petersburg Academy of Sciences during an era when women were discouraged from pursuing academic endeavors. Undeterred by these attitudes, she gained recognition for her exceptional work on differential equations and Abelian integrals. In 1871, the year this illustration depicts her, Kovalevskaya was a young woman in her twenties with a passion for mathematics that would shape her legacy. The monochrome artwork captures her intellectual prowess and determination as she delves into complex mathematical concepts. Kovalevskaya's achievements extended beyond Russia's borders when she was appointed to the University of Stockholm. Her brilliance shone brightly in 1888 when she won the esteemed Prix Bordin prize awarded by the French Academy of Science for her revolutionary paper on rotational dynamics. This historical portrait serves as a tribute to Sofia Kovalevskaya's indomitable spirit and unwavering dedication to mathematics. It symbolizes not only her personal triumphs but also represents an important milestone in gender equality within academia. As we admire this image, let us remember how one extraordinary woman defied expectations and paved the way for future generations of female mathematicians around the world.
