The lake has an area of 8,372 square kilometers (3,232 square miles) and a maximum depth of 281 meters (922 feet). Its waters are divided between two basins: Lake Chucuito to the north and Lake Huinaymarca to the south. The lake's main source of water is rainfall from nearby mountains, but it also receives water from several rivers that flow into it from both sides. The lake supports a wide variety of aquatic life including fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds. Its shores are home to many indigenous communities who rely on fishing for their livelihoods as well as tourism for additional income.
