16 inch naval gun loaded on a set of four POLLEN E wagons, 1944

This image shows a 16 inch naval gun being carried on a set of four POLLEN E wagons in March 1944. Built in the early 1900s, this POLLEN E set was capable of taking 30 tons of weight on each wagon when spread evenly. The wagons were specially adapted to carry these guns and used chocks and trestles to rest the weight of the breech and barrel along its length. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print from the STEAM Museum of the GWR takes us back to March 1944, during the height of World War II. The image showcases a remarkable sight - a colossal 16 inch naval gun being carefully transported on a set of four POLLEN E wagons. Originally constructed in the early 1900s, these robust POLLEN E wagons were specifically designed to bear immense weights, capable of carrying up to an astonishing 30 tons when evenly distributed. To ensure safe transportation, these wagons were ingeniously adapted with chocks and trestles that provided crucial support for both the breech and barrel along their entire length. The process of loading these formidable guns onto the wagons was no small feat either. Inside Swindon Works' workshops, cranes would delicately hoist each naval gun onto its designated wagon before embarking on its journey. This photograph not only captures a moment frozen in time but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and engineering prowess during times of war. It reminds us of the tremendous efforts made by individuals behind-the-scenes who worked tirelessly to equip our armed forces with powerful weaponry necessary for defense. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring image, we are reminded once again of the sacrifices made by those who fought valiantly during World War II and how their collective efforts shaped history forever.
