Military tanks loaded onto Crocodile G wagons, c. 1939

A train load of military tanks, loaded onto Crocodile G wagons, make their way through Acton, en-route to the Channel Ports, for shipment over seas. The movement of train loads such as this was challenging and often dangerous work for the driver and fireman, particularly during an air raid when this type of load would be a prime target for attack. However the work had to be done and the movement of munitions and military equipment became an everyday occurrence during the war years, particularly during the build up to D Day when the number of special government trains increased dramatically.
