Swindon Works Tunnel Entrance, 1935

A sea of men can be seen leaving the Works, probably at lunchtime. This was the main entrance tunnel for the Works. The doors were promptly closed after each call for work. Anyone late to work could not get in and have to explain themselves to the gatehouse staff

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in time at Swindon Works in 1935, as a sea of men make their way out of the main entrance tunnel, likely during their lunch break. Swindon Works, an essential hub of the Great Western Railway (GWR), was a hive of activity during the 1930s, with thousands of employees working around the clock to maintain and build locomotives and rolling stock. The tunnel entrance served as the primary point of entry and exit for the workforce, with the doors closing promptly after each call for work. Any employee who was late risked being denied entry and faced the consequences of explaining themselves to the gatehouse staff. The photograph offers a glimpse into the daily routine of the Swindon Works community, highlighting the dedication and discipline required to keep the railway running smoothly during this period. This image is a poignant reminder of the human element behind the machinery and infrastructure that powered the GWR and the wider railway industry in the 1930s.
